Turn your TV on with your phone

Turning a TV off from your phone always works. Turning it back on needs one setting on the TV, because a sleeping TV only listens for a “wake up” signal if you allow it. Most TVs ship with this turned off. It takes a minute to switch on.

Samsung

  1. On the TV, open Settings › General › Network › Expert Settings (newer models: All Settings › Connection › Network › Expert Settings).
  2. Turn on Power On with Mobile.
  3. Turn the TV off, wait 10 seconds, then press Power in Remote Papi.
  4. The first time you connect, choose Allow on the TV.

LG

  1. On the TV, open Settings › All Settings › General › External Devices (2021 models: Devices › External Devices), then open TV On with Mobile. Can't find it? Search Settings for it (older models call it Mobile TV On, under Connection).
  2. Turn on Turn on via Wi-Fi.
  3. Turn the TV off, wait 10 seconds, then press Power in Remote Papi.
  4. The first time you connect, accept the prompt on the TV.

Sony

  1. On the TV, open Settings › Network & Internet and turn on Remote start.
  2. Home network › IP control: set Authentication to “Normal and Pre-Shared Key” and choose a key.
  3. Enter that key in Remote Papi when you add the TV.
  4. Turn the TV off, wait 10 seconds, then press Power in Remote Papi.

Roku

  1. For full control (not just volume): Settings › System › Advanced system settings › Control by mobile apps › Network access › Enabled (older Rokus: Default or Permissive).
  2. Roku TVs (TCL, Hisense, Sharp, Insignia and more): Settings › System › Power › turn on Fast TV start.
  3. Press Power in Remote Papi to turn the TV on or off.

Roku sticks and boxes don't power off. They control your TV's power over HDMI, so Power works only if the TV supports HDMI-CEC.

Google TV / Android TV BETA

  1. The first time you connect, the TV shows a 6-character code. Type it into Remote Papi.
  2. On the TV, open Settings › System › Power & energy (names vary by brand) and turn on Network standby (or Wake on Wi-Fi / Wake on LAN).
  3. Turn the TV off, wait 10 seconds, then press Power in Remote Papi.

Works with TCL, Hisense, Philips, Sony and other Google TV sets, plus Chromecast with Google TV. Support is new: if something doesn't work, please email us your model.

Amazon Fire TV BETA

  1. The first time you connect, the TV shows a 4-digit PIN. Type it into Remote Papi.
  2. On the Fire TV: Settings › Display & Sounds › turn on HDMI CEC Device Control.
  3. Press Power in Remote Papi to wake it; the TV turns on with it if it supports HDMI-CEC. Power off puts it to sleep.
  4. Volume and mute: Amazon doesn't let phone apps change the volume, so use your TV's remote for that.

Works with Fire TV sticks, cubes and Fire TV smart TVs. Support is new: if something doesn't work, please email us your model.

Good to know

Same Wi-Fi

Keep your phone on the same Wi-Fi as the TV. Menu names vary a little between models and years.

Deep sleep & energy saving

Some TVs stop listening after a long deep sleep or with energy saving on. If power-on works in the evening but not the next morning, check the TV's energy settings.

Still not working?
